Relevance of "Tolerance" and a point of detail
This essay is a classic and it still has relevance in the conflict-ridden 21st Century world.
Forster is wrong on only one point, in believing that Ashoka was a great Buddist emperor. He is deceived by the myth that Ashoka created for himself.The rise of Buddhism in India and the reasons for King Ashoka embracing the same are set forth in Romila Thapar’s book, “Ashoka and the decline of Mauryas (Oxford, 3rd Edition, 2012)
